Benilda "Benny" Caixeta embraced the culture, language, people and life of New Orleans for 25 years. A native of Brazil, Benny came to New Orleans to study at UNO where she graduated with a B.S. in accounting. Her passion for volunteerism, was only exceeded by her enthusiasm for life. A quadriplegic, she was fiercely independent, living with dignity and grace. Her humor and joy were infectious and Benny was never short of friends. Benny's outstanding work as an advocate for persons with disabilities was so influential she was recognized by the Governor for her excellence. As Katrina headed towards New Orleans, Benny made arrangements to be evacuated. When the para transit service failed to pick her up, she called dozens of other services, a few of them said they would take her but not her wheelchair. For a quadriplegic, this was not an option. Benny was not forgotten, she was abandoned. Friends offered to come back and get her, but were turned away. On August 29, 2005, she drowned in her first floor apartment in Orleans East. Family and friends have been forever changed by her example of service and friendship. She was one of us, and she was the best of us. Benilda "Benny" Caixeta 1954-2005

Life sometimes isn't fair
But to know of a MAN that thought to get his family to safety first then stayed to help other families.
I say to him..THANKS for your thoughtfulness of others...You see I had family in Nw Orleans and he stayed to help who knows he may have saved one of mine.
To his wife and children I will keep you in my prayers.
For you have lost a Great husband and father -

Grandma, life without you is certainly hard. I wish you didn't have to go the way you did. But I also know that you are in a bettter place now. Yet the selfish part of me still wishes you were here. You were my best part of growing up. No matter what bad thing would happen, you were always there with your words of wisdom to make things better. You had this undying faith that I envy. One day I hope to be as happy and at peace like you were. I have 2 children. Elijah is 3 and Isaiah is 10 months. I am engaged to a great man named Adam who is also the father of my children. I only wish they could have known you. Anyway I want you to know that I love and miss you very much. Love always, your granddaughter Diana -

Ned, I am so sorry that you had to die. However, your legacy will not be forgotten in your sons, Chris & Brian. Chris and Brian are fine young man and that is contributed to you and Gayle. You always knew how to put a smile on the face of your family and friends and your sense of humor and caring will be sorely missed. Love, Rhonda & David -
